Barron Catchment Care's (BCC) iconic Green Corridor has managed to get some funding through the Caring for Our Country Program to support community participation in environmental initiatives within the Barron River Delta.

The Barron Delta will see an injection of effort in environmental restoration over the next couple of years. This project will bring together communities in the area with the aim of restoring and revegetating the area. This new initiative is part of BCC's iconic Green Corridor Project, which aims to rejuvenate the entire Barron River over a 20 year period. Barron River Catchment Management Association (BRiCMA) and Terrain NRM's Evizel Seymour stated that "There has been nothing like this before, and it is great to see the communities so excited about the project." "Now in its 5th year, the project already has more than 100 hectares of environmental restoration across 26 sites under its belt. We are slowly greening the river".

Cairns Airport P/L is one of the major Green Corridor sponsors, and their generous donation to the project was instrumental in BCCs success with this grant – a great demonstration of the leverage that can be achieved through corporate investment in community initiatives.

This exciting program runs over a 2-year period and will support local community groups, traditional owners, schools and Landcare groups in the Delta to improve the condition of their unique natural environment. Key partners include Cairns Regional Council, Conservation Volunteers Australia and Terrain NRM will work with BCC to ensure the project is a success. BCC has already held discussions with key community groups including Treeforce, Yorkeys Knob Residents Association, Holloways Beach Coast Care, Friends of Redden Island and Machans Beach community Association, and the response has been extremely positive.

The project will assist these and other groups with tree planting, tackling invasive weeds, supporting community working bees, rubbish removal, environmental awareness raising, communications and interpretive signage. In addition, the project will work with local Yirrgandji Traditional Owners to increase awareness of the cultural values of the Barron Delta. Community tree planting and working bee days will be held on weekends and will be open to the public to attend. During these community planting days local traditional owner representatives will give Cultural tours and interpretive talks in conjunction with information sessions from guest speakers. Sylvia Conway, Project Coordinator commented that "the tailored school programs will engage the younger generation, and a combination of programs will ensure that helping out our environment is fun and interesting for everyone".
