Terrain NRM welcomes the Australian Government's announcement of an additional $4 112 466 in Reef Rescue investment in the Wet Tropics for this financial year. This brings the Australian government's total commitment in the Wet Tropics this financial year to $6 328 604.
"The Reef Rescue program has been an outstanding example of collaboration between industry, regional NRM bodies and the Australian government", said Dr Allan Dale, CEO for Terrain NRM. "The program has been more than well accepted by the region's farmers because of this partnership approach, and there is an enormous amount of uptake in the program". "Reef Rescue works on the simple principle of industry, regional bodies and Government agreeing on the land management practice change targets needed to improve water quality to the Reef", said Dr Dale. "The program then supports land holders to make the required practice changes, with at least half the investment coming from farmers themselves". "Without this investment, many of these critical changes simply would not be able to happen in the short term". Even though we are in year three of the program, farmer interest and the quality of project proposals continues to increase. Agriculture Minister Tony Burke and Member for Leichardt Jim Turnour visited Gerard Puglisi's sugar farm in Mossman today to announce the investment.
