Northern Water Quality Benefits from Farmer Reef Rescue Uptake

Terrain NRM estimates that incentive funding from the first round of the Reef Rescue program has resulted in change to farming practices on 36,098ha of the Wet Tropics, including 21% of the northern cane industry and 20% of the banana industry. The adoption of best management practices on these farms means an overall reduction in the amount of nutrients, pesticides and soil lost from agricultural land in the Wet Tropics. This is good news for the Great Barrier Reef which receives high loads from flood waters during the wet season.
