Barron-Trinity Inlet Water Quality Improvement Plan
Barron-Trinity Inlet Water Quality Improvement Plan

The third Water Quality Improvement Plan (or WQIP) completed for the Wet Tropics Region covers the Barron River, Trinity Inlet and Cairns' Northern Beaches. The Barron River catchment is one of the top 10 priority catchments for reducing impacts on the Reef. Like the other WQIPs, the Barron Plan focuses on identifying agreed and affordable actions that will most effectively reduce the levels of sediments, nutrients and pesticides reaching the Reef, and monitoring their effects.

This Plan has been developed with assistance from regional industry and Traditional Owners, community groups, catchment and marine scientists, and the Queensland and Australian Government. It has included the compilation of existing research and planning in the region, as well as incorporated catchment modelling using the latest WaterCast modelling program. Together these data, information and knowledge sources helped prioritise the most appropriate actions to address water quality issues in these catchments.

Community engagement is an important ongoing part of the process particularly for the implementation of identified actions that will lead to improved water quality. For example some of the identified activities for the cane industry are being funded through grants made available through the Reef Rescue Program.  Monitoring of some aspects of water quality will also be undertaken as part of the Reef-wide Paddock to Reef program.
