2010/11 funded projects

Seventy four percent of Reef Rescue project applications were funded this year, which is the highest proportion in the three years of the program.

Terrain received 289 applications for Water Quality Incentive Grants for the 2010-11 round and 216 projects were funded, amounting to $4.2 million.

In the first year of Reef Rescue 48% of project were funded from 300 proposals. The second year of funding received a similar number of applications and 44% of those projects were funded.

In this the third funding round, 207 farmers received incentive grants to finance improvements to the way they manage their farms. This takes the total number of farmers to receive Water Quality Incentive Grants in the Wet Tropics to 523. Over 300 farmers have used Reef Rescue funds from the previous two funding rounds to improve their farm management practices, affecting runoff from approximately 343,000 hectares of agricultural land.

Last year 132 projects were funded by the program. This year, with the inclusion of small grants and wet grazing, the number of projects funded increased by almost 50%. Reef Rescue grants were distributed to 137 cane, 20 banana, 6 Tableland mixed cropping, 3 papaw, 22 grazing, 17 dairy and 9 catchment repair projects across the Wet Tropics.

A large variety of projects were funded that met priority practice objectives and included projects such as; the fencing of creeks and installation of watering points for cattle, reduction of fertiliser use on cane by subsurface fertiliser application and the restoration of priority catchment areas.
