Coastal Landscapes
Written by Michele Dale

The Coastal landscapes of the Wet Tropics are recognised as having high environmental, cultural and amenity values. These values are a result of the interactions between the sea, soil, geology, water, climate, and plants and animals of the region, which makes our coastal landscapes a very desirable place to live and play.

With the ever increasing levels of development occurring along our coasts comes an increasing level of impact or threat to these values. These threats are from changes brought about by;

  • Increasing population
  • Urban, peri-urban and rural development
  • habitat and landscape modification and fragmentation
  • Ad-hoc planning, and
  • Climate change

The coastal landscapes programme focuses on activities that address these threats and are aimed at ensuring the environmental, amenity and cultural values of the landscape are recognised and maintained through;

  • Retaining and managing the values and services provided by good condition coastal landscapes.
  • Improved planning and recognition of the values within the coastal landscape
  • Rehabilitating areas of high value that have been modified or are in poor condition.
  • Recognising Indigenous rights and interests within the landscape and supporting indigenous management of country
