The Johnstone River Catchment covers an area of 2325km2 which contains the North and the South Johnstone rivers and the point sources of their tributaries in the Tablelands. The Wet Tropics World Heritage Area occupies 985km2 of the catchment or approximately 1000km2 (43%) when including other protected areas. A significant percentage of endemic plant and animal species including the endangered Cassowary are located within the catchment. State forests and timber reserves occupy 613km2 and grazing, mostly located centrally, covers 493km2. The lower river flood plain and coastal areas are used intensively for cultivation particulary sugarcane (394km2), bananas and an array of tropical fruits.The average annual rainfall is approximately 2996mm making it one of the nations wettest catchments.
