The Russell Catchment covers an area of 562 km2. Arising in part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area behind one of Queensland's highest mountains, the Russell River winds 65 kms through rainforest, canelands, and farms producing bananas, lychees and other tropical fruits. The river shares a common mouth with the Mulgrave River at Mutchero Inlet, with the Russell River alone having an extremely high mean annual discharge of 630 000 ML.
Water quality, weeds (such as pond Apple, hymenachne and para grass) and the loss of coastal wetland habitat are the major issues along with erosion and stream channel instability.
