The future of water in the Wet Tropics
Written by Kathryn Dryden

The development of the draft Wet Tropics Water Resource Plan (WRP) has reached a very important stage.  An informal community engagement process is underway where feedback and comment is invited regarding groundwater and surface water modelling, water trading and management zones, and unallocated water provisions.

The Department of Environment and Resource Management's (DERM) water resource planning process is designed to plan for the allocation and sustainable management of water to meet Queensland's future water requirements. WRPs strive to achieve a sustainable balance between meeting human needs and those of the environment.

Terrain is contracted to support DERM's Wet Tropics WRP process by facilitating engagement in the development of the Wet Tropics Water Resource Plan (WRP).

DERM is inviting community feedback and comment regarding the following:

  • proposed options for water trading areas and zones of management
  • interest in different forms of trading (e.g. water licences or water allocations)
  • proposed groundwater management
  • industry aspirations with regard to unallocated water.

In mid December, DERM will be meeting with targeted industry groups to discuss issues such as irrigation demands, and with the Rainforest Aboriginal Peoples Alliance to deliberate on specific Indigenous issues.

DERM anticipates the draft WRP will be released for public comment by the end of February 2012 following which formal community engagement will commence. There will be a series of community and catchment meetings held where DERM will then be seeking submissions from the community in response to the Draft WRP.
