Farmers' day out in Tully, Dec 08
Written by Fiona George

Farmers will enjoy seeing what their mates are up to in Tully when they join a bus tour to look at sustainable land management practices in cane on Thursday, Dec 8th.

After meeting at Tully BSES station, they will first travel to an El Arish herbicide trial site and listen to Nicholas Matthews, Research and Development Officer with Nufarm, and Tom Nelligan from Syngenta talking about innovations in herbicides.

There will also be a display of equipment funded under the Reef Rescue program: a split stool fertiliser box, a double disc opener planting machine and shielded spray equipment.

The second stop is at Mario Raccanello's farm. Mario was recently named Australian Sugarcane Grower of the year for his innovative approach to cane farming. He will talk about his sustainable farming philosophy and demonstrate some of his practices that have been supported through Reef Rescue funding.

The final farm site will be at a joint project between Angelo Crema and Barrie Mackay at Warrami. They have implemented a range of improvements, including a major riparian protection and drainage project. Scientists from DERM will give an update on the Paddock to Reef Integrated Monitoring project that looks at farm scale runoff.

The tour concludes with refreshments back at the Tully BSES Station. For more information, please contact Jordan Villaruz on 4088 0712 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
