Cassowary Coast Regional Council is calling on home owners, builders, architects, retailers and others to support National Sustainable House Day on Sunday September 11. The region's first National Sustainable House Day event will be held at Innisfail's Johnstone River Community Gardens from 12pm to 2pm. Organisers want home owners to open their doors to the public for the day to showcase sustainable housing initiatives in the region. They are also calling on businesses to host stalls at the Johnstone River Gardens and show residents from across the region how they can make their homes more sustainable in easy, economically-viable ways. Council's Environmental Services Manager Geoff Wilson said the more homes and displays the better. "We'd love as many people to come on board as possible,'' she said. "We're hoping a lot of people will take advantage of this event so we can work towards becoming a more environmentally-friendly region when it comes to our homes. "There are so many little things that are simple to do and then there are all the other options from solar power and recycled building materials to home designs that are tailored to life in the tropics.'' The Sustainable House Day will include stalls on composting, recycling and using recycled materials, and there will be a barbecue lunch. In a big day for the Cassowary Coast, Sunday September 11 is also Great Northern Clean-up Day. Volunteers can be part of clean-ups at Innisfail, Wongaling Beach, South Mission Beach, Tully and Tully Heads. To be part of the event, go to http://www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/join/ to see the sites in your area. The Great Northern Clean-up will take place at these council-run sites from 9.30am to 11.30am, with a free barbecue for all clean-up volunteers at 12pm at the Sustainable House Day event.
