The Yasi Environmental Recovery Project run by Terrain NRM is supported in part by the Queensland Government's Skilling Queenslanders for Work Initiative. This support has enabled Terrain to provide employment, valuable job skills, and training to almost 50 local Queenslanders who are involved with on-ground work to restore important natural environments, and who may otherwise be out of work at this time. The type of training that is offered to the workers ranges from accredited certificates to information seminars, for instance chainsaw, first aid, and chemical handling certifications have been completed by many of the workers. The detail which sets Terrain's employment programme apart from the rest is the special attention to environmental awareness and cultural heritage. The reason for providing these types of training stems from our 'Lessons from Larry' tool which highlights the need to incorporate environmental and indigenous awareness's with typical training for on-ground works. The impact of the awareness seminars should penetrate through to the worker in the field when faced with a situation that may result in a compromised environmental outcome or disturbance to an indigenous site. In such an event it is expected that the results produced by workers who have participated in environmental and indigenous awareness training is of greater benefit to the restoration of the environment than without such training. At time of writing, the Yasi Environmental Recovery Project has delivered environmental awareness training to 120 participants from Terrain, Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA), Cassowary Coast Regional Council (CCRC), QITE, and Direct Employment Services (DES). Cultural heritage training has been delivered to a portion of the above mentioned participants, with the remainder to receive the training this week. The project is also funded by the Australian Government's Caring for Our Country. |
