Stepping out to find a NRM winner!
Written by Kathryn Dryden

Terrain is rising to the challenge of how to get more young people interested and involved with natural resource management (NRM). Using social media seems to be an obvious way to give some new ideas a go.

One of Terrain's most recent ideas is hoped to be a winner!  'Terrain' branded thongs were handed out at JCU's Open Day on Sunday 21st August in Cairns.  The thongs, combined with getting students to do some creative photography and post their pics on facebook, is hoped to get heaps of younger-generation NRM-minded people engaged in the region.

Terrain has an office located at JCU's Cairns campus and so received an invitation to have a stall at the Open Day. The Terrain team jumped at the opportunity so to potentially engage and attract younger recruits to the business of NRM and volunteerism. The 'Thongs, photos, careers and facebook' competition was launched there with the best photo promoting what NRM means to them, winning 1 month of paid work experience with Terrain.

Terrain's CEO Carole Sweatman said, "All younger-generation members of the Wet Tropics community with an interest in NRM are welcome to participate!  We look forward as a result to meeting fresh and enthusiastic people to contribute to strengthening the region's NRM work/volunteer-force."

The 'Thongs, photos, careers and facebook' competition is open to any person between the age of 16 and 30 with an interest in gaining work experience in NRM.  Whilst being launched at JCU's Open Day, it is not limited to JCU students!  The closing date for entries is likely to be in the coming months and will be announced soon on facebook, so to keep tuned, 'like' Terrain on facebook.
