Operation Cleanup Crews

Operation Clean Up is a project managed by DEEDI to help with clearing debris from farms and tourism businesses affected by Cyclone Yasi. It employs local farm and tourism labour displaced by the cyclone.

Terrain NRM is involved in rolling out the program and have applied lessons learnt from Larry in 2006—that the clean up process can have perverse environmental outcomes, particularly in our waterways.

Terrain is coordinating Clean Up crews dedicated to sensitive environmental sites.

Terrain's Environmental Recovery Officer Tania Simmons said, "Terrain is committed to ensuring maximum benefit to on ground environmental recovery."

30 Clean Up and 20 Green Army staff managed by Terrain will work on sites with significant public and environmental outcomes .

Work crews commenced on 9th May 2011 and will be employed for a period of 22 weeks.

  • Their key activities will include:
  • Stream bank, gully and wetland restoration
  • Replanting and restoration of impacted native vegetation
  • Reconstruction of wildlife corridors
  • Removal of debris spread by flood water or high winds Control of pest weeds and animals
  • Restoration of in-stream habitat
  • Mitigation of impact on protected species.
