Christmas is a time to get away from it all on a camping trip, a swim at a local waterhole or creek or simply visiting friends and relatives. While you are having fun in the country, please keep an extra eye out for threats to our natural environment. You can help Biosecurity Queensland weed eradication programs if you keep an eye out for one of the most serious threats to our rainforests and waterways – Miconia calvescens. Miconia is present in north Queensland and we have a team of dedicated workers targeting this plant for eradication. Biosecurity Queensland and Terrain need your help to find every single plant. Miconia has large leaves up to 70cm long. The leaves are dark green, have a purple underside and distinctive veins on top. This invasive plant can grow up to 15m and can quickly form dense thickets and can potentially take over tropical and sub-tropical rainforests. Miconia is a Class 1 Declared Plant under the Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Act 2002. Reports from members of the public are invaluable to the eradication program. Any suspect plants can be reported by contacting Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23.
