The disappearance of the traditional Australian back yard is a major environmental and health threat to Australia, said one of the authors of Bird Watching In My Back Yard, a new online publication.
Ron Smith, a Melbourne based publicist, said, "as Australia's capital cities see the disappearance of the traditional Australian back yard, it is more important than ever as a society that we encourage our children to develop environmental life skills." Bird Watching In My Back Yard provides parents and children with a family roadmap to share the enjoyment of bird watching and protection of birds in their back yard. Apart from identifying some of our most common birds and developing bird watching skills, this book is also about unleashing those creative children skills of drawing, painting and writing to immortalise some great and permanent memories to share with family. Mr Smith says apart from the back yard providing opportunities for children to learn environmental life skills, it is also provides a special place for people to deal with health issues. The back yard provides space and a sanctuary from the pressure and stress of modern life. It is also a major area for families to share their time together and with extended family, friends and neighbours. Ron Smith, together with Bob Winters, one of Australia's leading environmental educators, provides parents and children with twenty ways to enjoy and understand the birds which visit their garden. First there is an outline of the easy to understand basic skills in bird watching, followed by the most common areas to find birds in your back yard. Central to the hub of bird watching activities is the collection of the stunning photographs from Bob Winters of the 24 most common birds found in Australian gardens, each with descriptions, behaviour traits and conservation tactics to protect them. Ron Smith, the publisher of 'The Little Green Books', has turned the release of the online publication into a fundraiser for schools, charities and environmental community groups. "By producing a digital publication we are using the most sustainable form of publication." The fact that schools, charities, community groups, service clubs and environmental groups can raise funds by selling this publication online whilst spreading the environmental message is an extra plus for the community.
