The Johnstone River Community Garden will be officially opened this Sunday June 6th commencing at 9 am coinciding with World Environment Day activities nationwide. The following eco friendly ideals will be promoted at the celebration: Low Food Miles:Displays of locally grown produce Low Carbon Emissions:The Community Garden is a bicycle friendly facility with a bike rack on site. John Cole Toyota promotion of the fuel efficient Hybrid Camry Prius. Carbon Sequestration:A community tree planting will be undertaken to enrich the biodiversity on the Council's Riverside Reserve. The Community Garden's orchard will be expanded. Examples of working compost systems will be on show. Launch of the Gardens' Community Recycle Station:A drop off point for separated recyclable household waste. Recyclable plastic p.e.t. bottles, steel and aluminum cans, newspapers, cardboard and shredded paper can be placed in our Community Recycle Station for recycling in a partnership with Subloo's Pty. Ltd. Allocation of allotment garden spaceThe presentation of allotment garden beds to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Innisfail Youth & Family Care and the Innisfail State College, all not-for-profit organizations. Further allotments will be available for lease to individuals and/or groups .
