Mirriwinni State School Plants and People Garden

Students at Mirriwinni State School have a new ‘meeting place' to learn about and appreciate our beautiful native plants, thanks to a grant from Landcare Australia and the generosity of their local community.

Miriwinni students enjoy their garden

The project culminated in a ‘Planting Demonstration Afternoon - People and Plants' held at the school to showcase the work on Friday 4 April from 12 - 3pm. Hosted by Miriwinni State School's principal, Sandra Bardini, it was attended by teachers from surrounding schools who enjoyed refreshments whilst listening to talks about local native plants and their uses.

Organised by Terrain Natural Resource Management, a not-for-profit organisation located in Innisfail, the planting demonstration was part of Terrain's ‘Community in the Classroom' program designed to provide professional development opportunities in natural resource management for educators and networking teachers.

On March 20, 2006, Cyclone Larry tore through Miriwinni, Far North Queensland. Students at Mirriwinni State School lost their favourite climbing trees. Landcare for Larry" came to the rescue ... Terrain NRM organised a new garden.

The site for the garden was under some existing trees. First, the area was roped off and sprayed with herbicide. A 'meeting place' was made using local rocks. Pavers were laid down in the seating area. The students had a planting afternoon and invited teachers from other schools to see their work.

Plaques with the plant name and a short description were used to provide ongoing educational benefits. In this garden, only local plant species were used so students could learn about the local biodiversity. A bird bath added the finishing touch.

The garden is now a popular place for students to meet and talk and is a showcase for the school.
