This important coastal wetland in the Cairns coastal plain opened for community access in 2009 after a revegetation project by the Cairns Regional Council.

The purpose of the project is to promote community awareness of the Cattana Wetland through the development and use of environmental educational materials by James Cook University (JCU) students.

This project complements a broader local government coastal reserves management application by Terrain Natural Resource Management. A publicly-accessible online knowledge base will be produced by JCU students. This will consist of fifteen fact sheets accompanied by video clips of interviews with local specialists and residents about the wetland. This knowledge base will be expanded as future JCU students paricipate in the project, and will be available to community educators for volunteer and community education. Community awareness raising sessions will be conducted by the JCU student teachers as part of their formal studies through a range of strategies, including distribution of the fact sheets.
