It is with great pride that I pen this last web message to members and partners as Terrain CEO. It has been a fantastic six years, and an honour to serve my home region and community in such a critical role.

The key driver for stepping back is that "once in a life" opportunity to focus more attention on the kids as they both progress through High School. Additionally though, the Wet Tropics region, Terrain and its members need to continue to drive national and state wide policy agenda that support their natural resource management aspirations. By leading a new research and development partnership between JCU's Cairns Institute and Terrain, I'll be able to continue to service the organization and its members. To stay ahead, the region needs to drive national reforms rather than waiting for Brisbane or Canberra to call the shots. Working on behalf of all Australia's region's for example, Terrain has recently secured a real opportunity for landholders and managers to get the incentives they need for better land management through the Government's proposed Carbon Farming Initiative.

With good internal succession opportunities, I am pleased to announce that Carole Sweatman was the successful CEO Elect candidate, and she will commence duties on the 11th of October. Carole has a wealth of experience in community-based NRM and has been Terrain's business manager for the past two years.

I am very proud to leave the organization with a large and diverse membership, a great Board and staff base and financial position, and I believe, a real track record in supporting community innovation. It has been by far the my most enjoyable role in my career.

So while it is not a real goodbye, I do wish to thank you all for your friendship and ongoing support. I am confident Terrain will continue to grow and prosper to the benefit of its members in the years to come.

Meet the Tablelands Area Team! We'd like to introduce you to the dedicated people in our Area Teams over the next few issues: this time round it's the Tablelands Area Team, with Penny Scott (Team Leader), Bob Stewart, Evizel Seymour and Geoff Onus. What's happening in your area? Key activities undertaken by Terrain Area Teams include: Cairns: Urban connections and potential private sector engagement. 'Memorandum of Understanding' with Cairns Regional Council (CRC) regarding roles and responsibilities and linkages with local government natural resource management (NRM) activities. Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Council – opportunity through round table with LGAQ (Local Government Association of Queensland), RGC (Regional Groups Collective) and FNQROC (Far North Qld Regional Organisation of Councils) to build capacity in NRM work programs (including improving equipment, mapping, etc). Workshop will take place in August to develop a business plan. Mulgrave – Reef Rescue sediment traps Russell – Erosion control on Babinda Creek. Douglas/Daintree – Cassowary Ck Action Plan; sediment and biodiversity activities for river improvement; north Mossman constructed wetland stage 1 has commenced. Cassowary Coast: Pigs project – working on peri urban issues; baiting plan to go through the Cassowary Coast Regional Council and DEEDI (Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation). Other opportunities for investment are being explored. Research links between pigs and cane damage hoping to establish potential mitigation approaches. CFOC applications for Ingham (pigs) and Mission Beach biodiversity project. Engaging with Ergon Energy regarding vegetation management under powerlines. Seeking alternative management methods as well as sharing of mapping data and possible linkages to conservation sector. Discussing linkages between sustainable development and natural assets. CFOC - MA:MU coastal planning project and incorporation of cultural values. Potential Reef Rescue funding for drainage in the Tully Murray and potential Community Action Grants for Brilliantasia at Liverpool Ck. Tablelands: Involvement in Tablelands Regional Council steering committee around their Planning Scheme – seek to integrate NRM. Traditional Owner engagement workshop – highly successful. Established contacts with various groups and there is potential for an informal reference group to be developed. Green Corridor – looking into further options for corporate sponsorship. Green Army – permanent team established with indigenous mentor and traineeships. Barron – MOU between BRICMA (Barron River Integrated Catchment Management) and TRC (Tablelands Regional Council) regarding working together; Spring Ck sediment control proposal. Upper Johnstone – Irrigation Management Plan; Water Resource Plan; involvement in Tablelands Irrigator's Group. Herbert: 12 Coastal Reserve Plans are being finalised. Herbert nursery is well established through a partnership between Hinchinbrook Shire Council, Herbert River Catchment Group and Terrain; workplans of the Council and the Catchment Group have been aligned to compliment activities; this has been facilitated and supported by both organisations with assistance from Terrain. Reef Rescue – Cattle and Palm Cks projects have achieved well in landholder cooperation and uptake. Terrain staff have been working with DERM (Department of Environment and Resource Management) staff to establish a rainfall simulation trial to investigate fertiliser placement. Terrain, DEEDI and Herbert Cane Productivity Services are working together on the Herbert Demo farm. For more on Terrain's Area Team activities, please contact your local Terrain office.
