Happy new year from Terrain NRM!
It seems that so far we have had a quiet start to the wet season and I hope everyone enjoyed a break over Christmas.
The start of the year is always busy at Terrain, with mandatory reporting against the investment funds due early in the month. This work is important to communicate the breadth of project work completed by Terrain and partners and to celebrate the successes of the past six months. Once the final reports are approved I hope to post these to the web site for members' information. You can read some of the impressive fact and figures on our disaster recovery project in the article below reflecting on the one year anniversay of Yasi.
The commonwealth government also announced the first year of its Biodiversity fund in December last year, with a submission date of 31 January. With $946 million over six years, it presents an excellent opportunity to fund critical biodiversity projects in the region. Terrain has been working with Wet Tropics Management Authority, DERM, QPWS, FNQ ROC and the Office of Climate Change to develop a large scale project which recognises the importance of corridor linkages to the world heritate area. If successful this would bring funding into critical corridors across the region. I note that a range of other projects will be submitted by groups and I wish you all luck and hope that Terrain staff have been able to help where ever possible.

Acting CEO Penny Scott writes in Carole's absence:
We have exciting times ahead with quite a bit of funding coming into our region for the next 18 months from a range of sources. Terrain and partners were successful this year in getting funding for corridors work in cassowary and mahogany glider habitat through the Caring for Our Country Open Grants call. Many of you will be aware that for some years we have been seeking major funding for works in these areas. Although the budget has been significantly reduced from what we originally submitted, we feel that the networks and foundation that have been prepared over many years in Mission Beach and more recently in Mahogany Glider territory through the Post Yasi work, enables us all to hit the ground running and make the most of this opportunity. Congratulations also to Barron Catchment Care for securing more than $400,000 worth of funding for major restoration work in Mabi habitat on the tablelands. Other community partners were also successful with quite a number of Community Action Grants for our region.

Water Part Two - Quality
There is a lot going on with water planning in our region and last month we provided an update on the Water Resource Planning (water quantity) process.
As part of water quality management, Terrain NRM is currently developing Healthy Waters Management Plans (HWMPs) for the Herbert, Johnstone, Mulgrave and Russell catchments.
The other catchments within the Terrain region already have a Water Quality Improvement Plan (WQIP) and they are basically the same thing but are now prepared under State funding and legislation and so have a different name.
The HWMP process is closely coordinated with the Water Resource Planning process for the Wet Tropics. The intent of this collaboration is to provide greater efficiency for consultation and communication with stakeholders.
Watch out for workshops with catchment groups to be held in October. This will provide the next opportunity to review information and provide input to the HWMPs.
HWMPs are prepared under the Environment Protection (Water) Policy 2009 and:
- identify environmental values and management goals
- state water quality guidelines and Water Quality Objectives to enhance or protect the environmental values identified by community
- facilitate consistent, equitable and informed decisions about waters
- assist monitoring and reporting on the condition of the region's waters

While our CEO is on leave, Kathryn Dryden, Terrain's Communications Officer gets a chance to put a fun and exciting story front and centre in the members eNewsletter:
We have embarked on a fun and adventurous experiment to engage young people and students in our business.
The 'NRM, North Queensland Style' thongs and facebook competition has recently closed and a winner chosen! The prize being one month of paid work experience.
Mathilda Brunhilda is the winner with her fabulous photo of Cattana Wetland - red toes and all!
Participants received a pair of 'Terrain' branded thongs and were asked to submit a photo of the thongs in a place/scene that reflected what NRM means to them.
The competition was considered a great opportunity to get a keen person's foot in the door to hook up with a range of stakeholders via various Terrain projects and related networks, whilst receiving real experience in natural resource management (NRM).
We initially connected with nearly 250 people providing free 'Terrain' thongs and promoting the region's valuable natural resources along with Terrain's (and partners') role in supporting it.
The competition has so far brought over 170 people to our facebook page and generated some interesting and fun discussion.
Take a look at the photos and 'Like' our page for the latest and greatest in NRM!
Read more about the winning photo in the article within.

Water – important to us all, so have your say....
There is a lot going on with water planning in our region and I think it is timely to provide an update on the processes so far. I hope that most of you are aware that Terrain has been contracted by Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) to assist with community engagement in the statutory Water Resource Planning (WRP) process.
Water resource planning is the state government's process for addressing the allocation and security of supply i.e quantity. There is a separate process around water quality via Healthy Water Management Plans and that will be updated in the next e- news.
