Established in 2003, Terrain is a not-for- profit public company funded from a range of corporate, government and philanthropic sources. Current key funding programs include the Australian Government's Caring for our Country Program and its key component Reef Rescue, which combined are worth some $16 million, which Terrain is administering on behalf of the region.

Terrain's key role is to support implementation of the Regional NRM Plan by supporting action, facilitating funding and integrating effort to achieve sustainable communities and ecosystems in far north Queensland.

A critical factor in the success of the region's approach to NRM is the strength of its partnerships across all sectors and tiers of the community.

The Regional NRM plan

Terrain's activities are shaped by the Wet Tropics Regional Natural Resource Management Plan. The plan, developed by the regional community in 2004, sets down the goals and targets for the region that make sense not only for our environment but also for our community and economy.

The Board at Terrain is currently determining the best process for reviewing the NRM Plan.
