Terrain NRM is a community-based not for profit organisation that supports natural resource management (NRM) in the Wet Tropics.

We build partnerships to secure the health of our natural resources (including water, soil and biodiversity) and provide planning direction, information, advice and practical support to those interested in NRM in our region.

Mission Beach is gearing up to promote its nature-based tourism experiences thanks to a grant provided by Terrain NRM and funded through the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme. Local community group Mission Beach Cassowaries Inc successfully applied for the Community NRM grant to create a new website and free 16 page colour brochure promoting the areas environmental assets.

Nature-based tourism is a growing trend globally and Mission Beach is well placed to meet the needs of visitors interested in experiencing and engaging with the local environment. The funding will be used to market the area as a nature-based destination to attract more visitors and encourage them to stay longer.

It is also hoped that the website and booklet will also encourage local residents to see the value in protecting the natural environment.

The process of collating information on the areas nature-based tours and activities is already underway. A workshop facilitated by Terrain with Mission Beach Tourism, CCRC, Mission Beach Cassowaries, C4, QPWS, WTMA, nature based tourism operators and Traditional Owners will agree on the format and content of the website and booklet.

The group is planning to engage a photographer, graphic artist and website developer. Locals wishing to contribute with in-kind work are encouraged to make contact in order to keep costs down and maximise the benefits from the campaign.

Liz Gallie, President of Mission Beach Cassowaries Inc said, “The funding to produce the website and colour booklet is greatly appreciated. We will be liaising with Mission Beach Tourism about the success of the project to inform possible future editions, monitor stock supply at booklet outlets and maintain the website.”

The in-kind contribution to the project by the community group Mission Beach Cassowaries Inc is $5030 and funding through the Community NRM grant is $5577.
